During the thirty year rule of Joseph Stalin, millions of citizens were imprisoned in forced labour camps, exiled or executed. Russia has never fully confronted this dark history. With Suppressed By The Saviour, journalist and photographer Hester den Boer gives an intimate insight into Russia’s past and the current climate of growing repression.
The opening of the exhibition also marks the launch of the nonfiction book Onderdrukt door de verlosser. Een zoektocht naar Stalins erfenis in het Rusland van nu, and of a web app with visual stories that loosely follow chapters of the book. The trilingual web app – in Dutch, English and Russian – brings together the journalistic and the visual content of the project, while making it accessible to the international and Russian speaking community.
The exhibition will be on show untill February 3, 2019. On January 16, there will be a debate about Stalins heritage in today’s Russia, organised in collaboration with De Groene Amsterdammer.
