The photography collection of the National Archives contains a trove of stories. FACE TO FACE tells some of those stories, by pairing portraits that, together, reveal a third image: an untold story triggered by the combination. We see parallels and contrasts between individuals who may not have shared time and space, but do share a history. What connects Monica Lewinsky to Mata Hari, what binds Bep van Klaveren and Regilio Tuur beyond the fact that they were both world class boxers?

FACE TO FACE visual podcasts
Storytellers Wilfried de Jong, Onias Landveld and Audiocollective SCHIK members Nele Eeckhout, Mirke Kist and Siona Houthuys wrote short texts offering their own interpretations of the histories surrounding the portraits in FACE TO FACE, drawing on their particular backgrounds to put a different slant on the meaning of the images. All of the 45 combinations in the exhibition are accompagnied by a spoken text. Seven of them have been made available by Paradox in visual podcasts. Try them all out and let us know what you think! Notes from Aleppo: Tree of Hope
One year ago, the people of Aleppo were able to celebrate Christmas in relative peace for the first time in years. In El-Aziziyeh, a neighbourhood in western Aleppo with a Christian majority, a Christmas tree is set up in the square. But it is not only Christians who celebrate: hundreds of people take to the streets. Christmas seems to have become a symbol of peace for everyone.
Tree of Hope is the fifth episode in the web app Notes from Aleppo, in which Syrian photographer Issa Touma shows the daily struggles – and small victories – of the people of Aleppo and their efforts to rebuild their war-torn city. New episodes in the series will be published in the coming weeks.
Poppy-Trails of Afghan Heroin by Robert Knoth and Antoinette de Jong is on show until January 3 at the Lianzhou Foto Festival, China. The project follows the trails of Afghan heroin for two decades, covering the rise of the Taliban, the American intervention after 9/11 and the recent surge in opium production.
