Book launch: NOWHERE by Frank van der Salm

NOWHERE – Imagining The Global City is here! For more than three years we had planned to launch the book at the premiere of the exhibition. We all know what happened: museums are still closed, the exhibition has been delayed once more until early summer. But the book is ready and we can’t wait to share it with you. So let’s celebrate in stages: the exhibition at the Nederlands Fotomuseum in early summer, Art Rotterdam from July 1-4. Stage 1 is for today though: we proudly present our latest publication (co-published with Hartmann Books, DE): NOWHERE by Frank van der Salm!

The hefty monograph, designed by Irma Boom, shows a world in which Instagrammability seems to rule; in which the new reality is dictated by the seductive image that may (later) be made of it. Architecture, design and urban landscape, directed by the mechanisms of global big business. The same antiseptic beauty, all over the world.

NOWHERE collects Frank van der Salm’s work of the past 25 years. The image of a consumer-oriented, imaginary metropolis rises from this book. Images – sometimes upside down – question each other about the reality they represent. Together, they form the image of a city that, all of a sudden, seems to be simultaneously everywhere and nowhere, yet: here now. Inspiring textual contributions by Shumon Basar, Aaron Betsky and Urs Stahel, link Frank van der Salm’s oeuvre to the world of design, architecture, urban development, art and photography.

The large format, 360 page book is available in three different cover/belly band combinations, including 16 pp.fold outs and is printed in high quality at Zwaan Lenoir. The publication is supported by the Jaap Harten Fonds, Mondriaan Fund, the Breeman Talle Fund which is administered by the Prince Bernhard Culture Fund and our donors via Voordekunst.
