New exhibition and book by Hans van der Meer

On June 30, Hans van der Meer’s exhibition De koe, het grazen voorbij opened at Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar. More than 250 people joined the festive opening ceremony, with speeches by museum director Patrick van Mil, photographer Hans van der Meer and farmer Siem de Boer. Especially for this event, music theatre company Silbersee performed a scene from their outdoor opera Aardappelvreters.

For his latest project, Hans van der Meer looks at the changing world of the Dutch cow. In the past three years, he visited dairy farmers and innovators throughout the Netherlands. His work reflects on the complexity of modern farming, animal welfare, hi-tech food production and its impact on the environment. In many of the photos the cow looks puzzled. Or is it that she’s questioning us? How will we be shaping the future in food production? And what will the role of the animals be in it?

These questions and more will be the starting point of a debate at Pakhuis de Zwijger on 19 October.

The book Het moet anders/ Time to Change is now available in the YdocStore (language: Dutch and English, price €34.50). Designed by Kummer & Herrman, the book includes 54 photographs by Hans van der Meer, accompanied by 27 columns linking the industry’s present to the past and future of dairy farming.

The exhibition De koe, het grazen voorbij is on show at Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar until 28 October.

6 new episodes of 48 Stories now online

This May, Paradox and NOOR launched 48 Stories – Mapping the Palestinian Diaspora. Almost 200 people attended the debate at Pakhuis de Zwijger, with photographers, curators and researchers reflecting on the representation of the nakba. The collection of stories on 48stories.org has been growing ever since.

48 Stories documents the personal stories of Palestinians who were displaced after the nakba (Arabic for catastrophe) of May 1948, when the state of Israel was founded. In the past two years, seven photographers travelled to Palestinian communities around the world to capture their memories, experiences and everyday lives. Access the work of Ezz al Zanoon (PS), Tanya Habjouqa (JO), Rula Halawani (PS), Kadir van Lohuizen (NL) and Ali Noureldine (PS) on 48stories.org, a free web app optimized for mobile devices. With more stories to follow by Sarka Kvinka and Yasmine Omari (PS/US).

48 Stories aims to preserve the stories of Palestinians, both 1948 survivors and their descendants, and makes their histories visible in the present. It tells the stories of Umm Omar, Victoria Larach, Mustafa El-Masri and many others in online episodes on 48stories.org. Should you be aware of other stories including 1948 witnesses, please contact us at info@48stories.org
